Design, crops and rotation
The Centre for Sustainable Cropping is located to the south east of Balruddery Farm. These six fields (numbered 1-6 in the photo below) are divided in half in such a way that the soil type and margins are as similar as possible on both sides. The two treatments (C=conventional, S=sustainable) were then randomly allocated to one or other half.
A six-course rotation is being run across these fields with each crop being present in one field each year, as shown. The rotation comprises potato, barley, wheat, field beans and oilseed rape.
