Women in STEM event at SCRI
The universities of Dundee, Abertay and St Andrews, together with SCRI and Sensation, have organised a programme of events showcasing and celebrating Women’s Achievements in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).
SCRI will host a seminar by Professor Dianne Edwards, University of Cardiff on 10 March 2009. Professor Edwards is Distinguished Research Professor in the School of Earth, Ocean and Planetary Science at Cardiff University. Professor Edwards has been working with researchers in botanical and paleontological institutes in China, which, like Wales, has some of the best collections of fossilised early land plants in the world. Her work has thrown new light on the evolutionary events surrounding the first colonisation of the land.
Dianne says: “As a botanist I am primarily interested in these early land plants for their own sake. However that knowledge has value today as we try to understand climate change and its effects on the planet. These early land plants existed in environments with much higher levels of carbon dioxide than today’s flora and were indirectly involved in lowering atmospheric carbon dioxide levels.”
Professor Edwards’ seminar will be held at SCRI on 10 March 2009 at 11am. Numbers are limited and to book a place please contact Vivian Blok on 01382 562731 or email Vivian.Blok@scri.ac.uk
The events will take place from 16 February – 20 March. For a full list of events please see the PDF file: Celebrating Women’s Achievements in STEM on the Dundee University website.
