Estate, Glasshouse and Field Services
Estate, Glasshouse and Field Services are responsible for the comprehensive range of glasshouse and controlled-environment cabinets and rooms at SCRI. There are around 10,000 m² of glasshouse facilities available, ranging from cold glasshouses to sophisticated containment glasshouses with associated laboratories. SCRI also has 13,000 m² of polytunnels and net structures.
Staff produce consistent, high quality plant material under a large variety of experimental regimes throughout the year to support scientific staff. The provision of these facilities is possible due to a capital grant from the Scottish Government.
SCRI has around 215 ha available to conduct a wide range of agricultural, horticultural and environmental trials. An expert service is provided for land preparation, sowing, drilling, harvest and clearance of residues. As well as annual crops such as potatoes, brassicas and cereals field staff also maintain 10 ha of perennial soft fruit trials at SCRI.
As part of ongoing maintenance of the SCRI estate improvements to biodiversity have been made in line with the objectives of Linking Environment and Farming (LEAF). This has involved planting individual hardwood trees, a mixed native hedge and removing a large Leylandii hedge.
Display boards have also been erected at strategic points on the public paths system to help explain the work of SCRI.
The Living Field Community Garden has been increased in size to include the growing of rare arable weed species. This educational resource continues to develop the links between schools, science and agriculture.
